EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – Now that most of the county fairs in the area are over, it’s time to start celebrating the German heritage of the tri-states.
Two major festivals kick off Thursday in Evansville and Jasper.
Both events feature many German traditions, food and drink.
In Evansville, it’s the 58th annual Volksfest, hosted by the Germania Maennerchor.
It runs until Saturday.
Volksfest special events include:
The fourth annual “Brat Trot 5k” starts at 8:00 a.m.
The special children’s entertainment at 11:00 includes a free children’s meal.
German costume contests and games.
Further north, Strassenfest kicks off in Jasper and continues through Sunday.

Open exhibitions of complete sets of cups, buttons and Strassenfest programs.
Old German Script translates audience German script elements provided by Marilyn Nathan.
Exhibition on German immigration in Dubois County and exhibition on the military-civil war during the Cold War 1945-1991.
German jewelry on display at the Dubois County Museum; special artifacts from the Museum that are of German provenance or influence.
Former Army Chaplain, Fr. Micheas Langston, OSB, speaks of “I was there when the wall came down.”
