Kunstfest, German heritage festival of New Harmony this weekend

Kraut balls, polka dots, hundreds of art vendors, and a liar contest are among the features of this weekend’s Kunstfest.

The event starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday and continues until 5 p.m. Sunday in downtown New Harmony and is the historic community’s largest festival of the year and one of the largest of its kind in the ‘Indiana.

Kunst, which means ‘art’ in German, is one of the highlights of the festival featuring artists from across the region exhibiting and selling their creations and lining several streets in the city center.

The festival also offers opportunities for entertainment, dining and learning. The food will include German and festival dishes such as bratwurst sausage, kraut dumplings, kuchen, apple cider, chicken and dumplings, German potato salad, brain sandwiches, fried bologna, ice cream, hot corn and more. Entertainment will include dulcimer, bluegrass, polka, and some genres of German folk music.

The Big Whopper Liars competition takes place on Saturday at the Murphy Auditorium. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the contest will begin at 7 p.m.

There will be activities for the kids at the family stage at Maclure Square. Demonstrations of historic crafts, including blacksmithing, rope making, pottery, weaving, spinning and more, will also be at the festival.

Parking will be available at the Atheneum Visitors Center, as well as the former location of the New Harmony School and with shuttles transporting visitors to and from the festival.
