Paul and Laura Grammer awarded German Heritage Prize 2021

The Sister Cities of Jasper, the Jasper Deutscher Verein and the Jasper Partnership Commission presented Paul and Laura Grammer with the German Heritage Award at the annual German Heritage Dinner held on Thursday, October 7, 2021.

Since 1999, Sister Cities of Jasper, the Jasper Deutscher Verein and the Jasper Partnership Commission have celebrated German-American Day in Jasper in October and awarded the German Heritage Award. The German Heritage Award recognizes individuals or groups who have generously contributed time, talent, or resources to maintain, enhance, or expand our German heritage in Dubois County.

Paul and Laura have been members of the Jasper Deutscher Verein for many years and have contributed their time and talent to the club. Laura served for four years as Treasurer of the Deutscher Verein and Paul and Laura provided leadership and support in the work to manage the stands at Strassenfest.

In 2019, Laura was instrumental in bringing German heritage to the Thursday evenings of Strassenfest. As one entry submitted for the award so aptly put it, “Countless hours have gone into planning and practices, and just plain hard work!”

A further nomination said: “Laura’s thoughts and dreams, with the support and help of her husband Paul, were instrumental in bringing German heritage back to the opening night and ceremonies of Strassenfest. Laura’s efforts to engage young people in our German heritage are sure to contribute to our mission to preserve, promote and celebrate our German heritage for future generations.

“Paul and Laura so deserve this award. You rarely see one without the other, working together, to offer support or lend a hand where needed,” said Mary Leah Siegel, president of Sister Cities of Jasper, when presenting the price at the Grammers. “Their commitment to community, family tradition and German heritage is nothing short of amazing.”

Jasper Sister Cities was established in 1985, creating a sister city partnership between the village of Pfaffenweiler in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and the city of Jasper, Indiana, USA. The Jasper Partnership Commission was established to promote the Jasper and Pfaffenweiler partnership through the town halls of both cities. The Jasper Deutscher Verein was founded in 1980 to promote, preserve and celebrate the proud German heritage in Jasper and the surrounding area.
