Over the past two years, many of us have welcomed a new four-legged friend into our homes, as the Kennel Club has seen dog ownership increase nearly eight percent during the pandemic.
But with 221 different purebred dog breeds to choose from, there’s a lot of thought to be done before selecting your perfect pup.
There’s even academic guidance to seek out, with psychologist Stanley Coren’s book “The Intelligence of Dogs” ranking breeds by instinct, obedience and adaptability.
A dog that often appears at the top of people’s canine wishlists is the Miniature Schnauzer – they were one of the UK’s 10 most popular dog breeds in 2020 and have a range of positive attributes that make them a great pet.
Here are 10 fun and interesting facts about the breed.
The name Schnauzer comes from the German word “schnauze”, which means a muzzle or muzzle – a perfect name for this dog with its cute square face.

The Miniature Schnauzer originated in the mid to late 19th century. Germany, where farmers bred him to create the perfect vermin-hunting dog.

Miniature Schnauzers are quite intelligent dogs – the 12th smartest breed according to Stanley Coren’s book “The Intelligence of Dogs”. By comparison, the Standard Schnauzer ranks 18th and the Giant Schnauzer a modest 28th.
