Hard work and hard work, Bellingham is tailor-made for Germany’s biggest derby. The England international picked up an assist in his only meeting with regional rivals Schalke so far, and hasn’t missed a game so far this season. Despite their best efforts, BVB lost 3-0 at RB Leipzig on matchday six and 2-1 to a Manchester City side managed by former team-mate Erling Haaland in the UEFA Champions League midweek. Nevertheless, a return to winning ways in the derby could take Edin Terzic’s side top of the Bundesliga – at least overnight. An unused replacement at Leipzig, Mats Hummels has been given the green light on Nico Schlotterbeck to partner Niklas Süle against City. Considering the Black-Yellows have kept clean sheets in four of the five league games Hummels has started in 2022/23, the veteran defender can expect to keep his place in the derby. USA playmaker Gio Reyna has been favored over Julian Brandt in one of two other changes, and could be in line for his first Bundesliga start to the campaign. The reinstatement of the more attacking Brandt at the expense of Emre Can is also on the agenda.
Schalke disappointed the black and yellow side of the Ruhr district by winning promotion to the Bundesliga on first request, as 2021/22 Bundesliga 2 champions, no less. The Royal Blues make the short jump to Dortmund with six points from as many games, fresh from a 3-1 derby win over Bochum – their first three-point run of the season. Head coach Frank Kramer is still without defender Marcin Kaminski so he is expected to continue with a central defensive partnership of Japan international Maya Yoshida and Liverpool loanee Sepp van den Bergh. Jordan Larsson knocked down Uruguayan playmaker Rodrigo Zalazar against Bochum but the tables are set to be reversed at Signal Iduna Park. Curiously, all players from Kramer’s planned starting lineup will play in the legendary Revierderby for the first time – the 99th in the Bundesliga era.
